Competencies As A Catalyst For Change
Many organisations invest in competencies believing it to be the right thing to do, without fully thinking through what difference they will make to the organisation. This can be an expensive exercise if the competency set then sits gathering dust on a shelf.
Competencies work best when they are effectively deployed to add value into:
Recruitment and selection: Ensuring that you hire people with the skills, knowledge, behaviours and underlying characteristics required to succeed in your organisation and providing recruiters with an objective basis beyond academic qualifications and experience for selection criteria design and decision making
Job design: Providing clarity for employees, contractors and line managers, as well as ensuring that the behaviours required are transparent and aligned with the contribution required from the job, and in defining job level and associated reward structures
Performance management: Providing an objective framework for assessing and discussing performance in behavioural as well as output terms, providing focus to appraisal and review discussions, and making retention decisions
Learning and development: Providing a structured system to develop learning objectives and design learning interventions aligned with and targeted to the needs of the individual and of the team, as well as categorising existing levels of available competency and identifying gaps in team wide competency requirements
Coaching: Providing objective criteria for identifying and discussing behaviours, as well as providing direction for performance improvement
Planning: Allowing an objective assessment of a potential pool of candidates for succession, providing a framework for identifying gaps in required behaviours and allowing people to understand what it takes to progress and succeed
Cross functional working: Ensuring fair, objective and accurate assessment of behaviour across different contracts, and enabling greater transferability of employees between contract teams. Providing an effective base to underpin matrix organisational structures.
